Masterly document of transforming the character of a cultural
commodity into sound, and via decomposition and manipulation
giving it an entirely new structure and meaning. Acoustic
signatures collected from railway stations shift into soundworks
bearing the fluence and dynamics of the sound sources, yet
presenting them in the form of harsh ambience often taking
an overwhelming approach by piercing all senses with all-engulfing
frequencies. These 8 new pieces belong to the series of
this Italian sonic genius exploring field recordings, and
presents by far one of his strongest works thus far.

Fifth instalment
in the seven-part series presenting various locations in
Reutov, the city of origin for this acclaimed Russian post
industrial outfit. Launching off with the ceaseless hum
and rhythm of heavy machinery grinding onwards as alarm
sounds form into hysterical choirs complementing the slowly
proceeding pounding of the machines. As an aftermath, the
second piece bears a calmer approach with pulsating drones
and loops yet retaining a profoundly ominous nature. After
proving themselves to master a wide variety of styles within
the post industrial genre, Reutoff present here a
rather traditional blend of dark ambient industrial - nonetheless
remaining at least equally strong as their previous efforts.

There is obscure and then there is
Obscure. The difference is subtle, but when you hear Sink,
you know the limit between obscure and Obscure has been
surpassed. The Process is a beast that drags you
below the surface and lets you gasp for air just enough
to keep conscious and experience the horror. Monumental
wall of sound built from demented vibrations, violent distortion,
wailing feedback, reverberating clashes and almost choral
(in)human voices echoing in your mind like amplified painful
memories; and when the wall collapses, the undertow pulls
you deeper into paranoid and disturbing surroundings filled
with static drones, scorching electrical trills and gravely
impressive Obscurity that defies mental health. You may
never reach back to the surface
This is not a sludge
record. This is not a drone record. This is not an experimental
record. This is The Process.

Colossal is the word that is bludgeoned
into your mind when Hebosagil's debut album forces
itself out of your speakers and 43 minutes later you know
you have experienced something colossal. This five-piece
from Northern Finland boldly mold their colossus from diverse
influences and elements, their approach ranging from slow,
crushing doom to violent hardcore bursts and riff-heavy
sludge, all forced through unhealthy doses of distortion
and performed with fiercely rocking energy. "Colossal"
includes 7 tracks perfectly showcasing Hebosagil's
varied and uncompromising style, but most importantly everything
has been tied together with excellent sense of songwriting
and dynamics, complemented by the crushing production.
Will cause vibrations to fans of Electric Wizard,
Sourvein, Godflesh, Autopsy, Eyehategod,
Entombed and Motörhead.

Just when you thought Hebosagil had found their
niche on the debut album "Colossal", the band
flips the bird at you and deliver "Ura". Already
hinted by their split releases with Viisikko and
Two Beats Off, Hebosagil have changed their
language to Finnish and smashed their chain of distortion
pedals in favour of a more organic, yet perhaps even more
violent sound. Seven songs of genre defying groove which
can go from slow dirge to filthy punk craze without a need
to rescue the band from the swamp of forced versatility
- not saying that swamp isn't already filled with useless
bands. On "Ura", you can find the driving sludge
riffs from previous releases, but also a punky noise rock
vibe nodding towards bands like Unsane and Radiopuhelimet.
Be prepared to stand on your feet for weeks after hearing
"Ura", Hebosagil are about to give you
the spanking of a lifetime!

"Licked Inch
Fur" is the latest four-song EP from top-notch Finnish
noise rock act Throat, and somehow it's even better
than the "Adult Situations" 7" that I wrote
about three months ago. I mentioned last time that the band
seems to draw frequent comparisons to 16, Unsane,
and Fudge Tunnel, but regardless of whether or not
I agree with that, I will say that this EP puts Throat
right up there with those highly regarded acts in terms
of overall quality level. Surging rhythms, plodding basslines,
eerie feedback, ringing dissonance, harsh vocals
it's
all here in fine form. The songwriting has an unexpectedly
dark heaviness to it as well, and that definitely pays off.
And it's all wrapped up in an excellent recording that keeps
everything sounding warm and natural giving each
element its own breathing room in the mix. Awesome, awesome
stuff. There's absolutely no reason why fans of this particular
style shouldn't be absolutely flipping out over this band!

"A fork is a cold shiny tool / To
pierce, tear and ingest / Whoever has the fork in hand /
Controls the meal of its choice." The opening lines
for the Lard song, "Forkboy" which in turn
gave the name for an Oulu-based quartet formed in 1993.
Born out of love for AmRep noise, AC/DC, Dead
Kennedys and driven by twenty-something angst, Forkboy
recorded three demos and one previously unreleased session
during their 6 year existence and it's all documented here
on one disc. Furiously rocking songs packed with gritty
guitars and feedback, rhythm section heavy as an elephant
turd and as the band puts it, "lots of shouting".
The original recordings have been carefully restored and
remastered by Pentti Dassum and the sleeve features original
artwork and photos by the band along with liner notes. If
you were there during the late 90s noise rock craze or if
you have only recently discovered its splendour or if you
just have a boner for hidden gems of Finnish punk/noise/rock,
this CD is for you!

Always on the brink of self-destruction,
the Finnish sludge trio Stumm had a painstaking seven-year
run of activity between 2003-2010. In addition to the material
released on the demo, full length album and two split vinyls,
the band had a selection of songs that were only performed
in live situations prior to the band eventually ceasing
to exist. All unreleased material is presented on this tape,
the quality of performances and recordings ranging from
horrid to unbearable, but Stumm was never one for
entertainment value or good vibrations. Pure pain put into
music. Besides the previously unreleased material included
are the only two cover songs Stumm ever played live,
by Deep Purple and Mayhem, respectively. "Stumm
is Dead" presents the final nail in the coffin for
one of the early bands in the Finnish sludge scene.

When a band from far flung Finland drops
a recording like this on us, we're all ears, especially
when we know damn well the hearing in those ears will be
ruined that much further by the recording itself. Throat
is a four-piece from the land that held back Russian encroachment
for thousands of years, and that same diehard, winter war
room mentality is at work on "Short Circuit",
recorded by James Vuoh. It's easy and a bit cheap to liken
any and all modern noise rock to the Amrep catalog, and
even though Throat tips the fur-brimmed hat in that
direction, other important short-circuited touchstones include
Trance Syndicate, and the early, raw nastiness churned out
by both Blast First and Sub Pop, but with more groove, and
more loud/quiet/loud/weird/loud dynamics. The lumberjack
thud of early Tad, and the spatial bleakness of mid
period Neurosis come to mind. Even the strangling
abrasion of Big Black and Einstürzende Neubauten.
But Finland is Finland. Finland is not Washington State,
Berlin, New York or Minnesota. It's even stranger. Full
days of light. Full days of darkness. Midnight sun. Noon
blackness. A nation and scene at the far edge of the world.
It's no wonder "Short Circuit" is as bizarre and
hardcore as it is.

A tipsy noise rock band thrown in a blender
with some razor-sharp electronic buzz. Sounds good? How
about that whole shit smoothie served to you by a halfwit
yelling whatever profanities come to his mind? If that sounds
good, Overdose Support's debut tape "Babylon
Healthcare System" is right up your alley. Demented
noisy punk/rock leaning heavily towards noisy electronics,
performed by members of Katakombi, Sokea Piste
and Baxter Stockman.

Some people seek professional help when
certain obsessions no longer remain under control. For some
people it's too late and they end up institutionalised or
dead. Some people find relief in celebrating their obsessions
most deep and foul through music, and what a better way
to share your dreams of rusty razor blades, cum stained
polaroid collections and romantic encounters ending up in
police investigations than through scuzzy noise rock. Sleiveen
Hostess makes its debut with a six-song cassette jam-packed
with filth similar to the unpleasant sounds of Brainbombs,
Drunkdriver or even Rectal Hygienics.
